Columba Catholic Primary School Acknowledges the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians and pay respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Columba acknowledges the Bunurong’s continuing relationship to the land and waterways and respects that their connection and spiritual identity are maintained through ancient ceremonies, songlines, dance, art, and living culture.
We pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of the Bunurong and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders who have guided and continue to guide our work.
Principal Message 13th June 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians
A reminder to all parents that the Fight MND beanies are a valued part of the Columba school uniform. Students are free to wear these beanies as part of their winter uniform.
As a school, we deeply value the Fight MND charity as it funds vital research into Motor Neurone Disease, provides care and support for those living with MND, and ultimately seeks a cure for this devastating condition. Beyond its direct impact, supporting Fight MND also unites us as a community, encouraging us to work together in fighting issues, diseases, or problems that we or a loved one may face. Our children connect with this because many of them love footy, so we as a school can use this opportunity to teach our children how important it is to care for the 'other'.
This spirit of collective care and action resonates deeply with the teachings of Christ. Jesus consistently demonstrated compassion and actively sought to alleviate suffering, particularly for those who were vulnerable and in need. He taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew 22:39) and to care for "the least of these" (Matthew 25:40).
By supporting initiatives like Fight MND, we embody these Christian values, extending a hand of hope and solidarity to those battling immense challenges.
This year, the school has purchased a digital Fight MND beanie as a way of donating to the foundation, but also as a visible way to show our solidarity and connection to the wider community.
The challenge I put to you is: How can you help your local community and the people in it? How can you reach out to those who need the most help, just as Jesus did?
How You Can Help Your Community
The most impactful ways to help generally fall into a few key areas:
-
Volunteering Your Time: Local organizations are always looking for an extra set of hands. Consider food relief volunteering, tutoring, or social groups, or check with local aged care facilities to visit residents. You could also help out at community events, support local schools, sporting teams, or even join the CFA or SES as an emergency services volunteer. Don't forget simply checking in on neighbours, especially those who might be elderly or living alone.
-
Donating Resources: If time is tight, you can still contribute. Financial donations to charities like Fight MND or local community groups are always appreciated. You can also donate non-perishable food items to local food banks (St. Vincent De Paul), gently used goods to op shops, or even donate blood if you're eligible.
-
Supporting Local Initiatives: Keeping our community vibrant means supporting local. Shop at local businesses in Bunyip, Garfield and Longwarry to keep money circulating in the area, and attend community events like markets or festivals. Spreading the word about local initiatives on social media or by word of mouth also makes a big difference.
No matter how big or small, your contribution can strengthen our community.
Grade 6 Confirmation
On Wednesday, June 4th, Grade 6 students from Columba celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Johns Koo Wee Rup Church. The church was filled to capacity with proud parents and loved ones who witnessed this significant milestone in the students' faith journeys.
Confirmation is a pivotal sacrament in many Christian traditions, including Catholicism, which deepens and strengthens the grace received at Baptism. Through the anointing with chrism oil and the laying on of hands by the Bishop (Bishop Greg), the confirmed are sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. This sacrament empowers individuals to become more mature in their faith, taking on a greater responsibility for their spiritual lives and their role within the Church community. It affirms their membership and commitment, calling them to actively live out their faith and bear witness to Christ in the world.

A Window Into Learning At Columba
We’re so proud of all our students for their sportsmanship, determination, and teamwork.
Last Friday, we celebrated Columba Day. Students caught buses to St. Jospeh's Church in Iona for Mass. This Mass was very special, as we came together as a school to honour the life of Mrs. Rosemary Ahrens, who recently passed away. Although this is a sad time for students and staff, we are very blessed to be able to reflect on how Mrs. Ahrens made a positive difference to our school and our lives. We will cherish our memories of her and the time we have shared.
After recess, students participated in activities with their House Group. This was a great chance for them to mix and engage with peers from other grades and age groups. A sausage sizzle for lunch is always appreciated by everyone, too!
The afternoon entertainment was a little different this year. You could even say it was kept a little hush-hush as it was the Columba staff who were asked to put on performances to show their talents! Shenanigans were on show, with The Enormous Turnip Act, an Alpaca on the loose, Card Tricks, Ballroom dancing, and various efforts of singing! It was wonderful (as well as a relief) to have been entertaining enough to see the smiles on the students' faces!
We officially congratulated Ms. Janine Kilmartin for 25 years of service in Catholic Education! She received her plaque from Mr. Greco, who awarded it to her on behalf of the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited.
The next time we gather will be on

Important Information for this Fortnight
Get ready for a cozy day at school! On Friday, July 4th, which is the last day of Term 2, we'll be holding a Pyjama Day to support The Pyjama Foundation and in support of Bunyip Kinder.
For a gold coin donation, students are invited to come to school dressed in their favourite PJs. All money raised will go directly to the National Pyjama Day fundraiser, which officially takes place on Friday, July 25th, 2025.
The Pyjama Foundation does incredible work, raising much-needed awareness and funds for children in foster care. The money collected helps them offer learning skills, fund educational resources, and provide stable, positive relationships for these vulnerable children.
We're also excited to announce a special partnership for this event! Our student leaders will be visiting Bunyip Kindergarten on Pyjama Day to share the spirit of giving and foster connections within our local community.
As a Catholic school, we embrace opportunities like Pyjama Day to engage with Catholic Social Teaching. This event perfectly aligns with several key principles:
- Dignity of the Human Person: Every child, especially those in foster care, deserves to be treated with respect and to have their inherent dignity upheld. By supporting The Pyjama Foundation, we help provide them with the resources and relationships they need to thrive.
- Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable: Catholic Social Teaching calls us to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. Children in foster care often face significant challenges, and our contributions help to lighten their burden and offer them hope.
- Community and the Common Good: We are all part of a larger community, and we have a responsibility to work together for the well-being of all, particularly those who are marginalized. Pyjama Day encourages our school community to unite in support of a common good – providing a brighter future for children in foster care.
We encourage all students to participate in this fun and meaningful day. Your gold coin donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in the lives of children who truly need our support.
Thank you for your generosity and for helping us instill these important values in our students.
Primary School Disco Date Change!
Dear Families,
Please note that the date for our upcoming Primary School Disco has been changed to Thursday, July 31st.
This change was necessary due to conflicting dates and to ensure we have adequate staff and equipment available to make the disco a fantastic and safe event for all our students.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding. We're really looking forward to a fun Thursday night in July with all our primary students!

'Pupil-free days, student-free days, school closures' are days of no school for students. These are scheduled days for either Professional Development (PD) for staff, Time In Lieu (TIL) days where staff have worked overtime, or school closures where no one is at school.
