Acknowledgement of Country
Columba Catholic Primary School Acknowledges the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians and pay respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Columba acknowledges the Bunurong’s continuing relationship to the land and waterways and respects that their connection and spiritual identity are maintained through ancient ceremonies, songlines, dance, art, and living culture.
We pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of the Bunurong and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders who have guided and continue to guide our work.
Australia has a thriving imported heritage of nursery rhymes, fables, American Halloween celebrations and even the Mexican Day of the Dead, but scary spirits have been part of Aboriginal cultures for centuries.
Inspired by the art exhibition Boo! Aboriginal Ghost Stories and Other Scary Matter, that took place at the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute in Adelaide earlier this year, producer Fiona Croall explores the many different spirits located within Aboriginal culture.
Drawing on conversations with curator Troy-Anthony Baylis of the Jawoyn people and Inawinytji Williamson from the APY Lands, Boo! Aboriginal Scary Matter is a mix of real and phantastic Aboriginal mythologies, set to a haunting improvised soundscape composed and performed by Nathan May.
Fiona Croall is a senior producer with Fig Media. Her music features, long form documentaries and landmark radio series have been broadcast across all BBC networks and ABC Radio
